Greener Computers?
I was just thinking about a greener computer. I’m an apple fan so I went to the apple website to see how green their commitments are. I was impressed to find out that as far back as 1990 they have been making a change to become a greener apple. You can read all about it here: Apple Environment
They also recycle your old computer regardless of manufacturer.
Looking around the office, I notice the only machines left are apple computers. I purchased my first mac back in 2001. A 466 G4 computer. So I was thinking, I should hook it up to the network (plug ethernet cable and turn it on) and see if it still worked or if I was just keeping it for nostalgic reasons. Low and behold, it still worked. It had an older version of OS X but my other computers could connect to it with no problems. What really surprised me was the fact that I could share the screen of my older computer using my newer computers running OS X Leopard! AHHH my old desktop… WHAT A MESS!
I didn’t even need to plug in a keyboard, a monitor and a mouse… All remotely controlled.
Well back on topic… Greener computers.
Wouldn’t a greener computer be one that would never need recycling? One that 6 years later works without problems. This computer can now be used for simple things like checking emails, going online and viewing websites or add another hard drive to it, and make it into a mini web server. Maybe Apple timemachine?
I’m a professional who relies on his computer everyday. I’m currently running the latest and greatest web and graphic software with no hitches on a 3 year old computer. Never have I owned Virus or Spyware protection or needed to. You don’t get viruses running OS X. Yes you do pay a little bit more for apple products then you normally would. With the attention to details and design they make a much superior product that will last longer then most in the market. So if in 7 years I have only purchased 2 computers that I really needed, before Apple I was purchasing a new computer every year and a half. That’s about 5 computers in the time span of 2 apples.
Now imagine, a computer like this being used in offices around the world. What a huge impact to the environment then? With low cost apple computers which can handle the day to day business routines such as the mac mini. Out last any PCs running today. Give the IT dept less of a headache due to how stable these machines are and how easy it is to troubleshoot.
I have an old friend who is a Die hard PC user. He always jokes around with me and tells me he owns an apple. He uses it as an anchor for his boat.
My reply to him: Apple, it just works…
